Business continuity

What is backup as a service, and why does your company need it?

Backup as a service (BaaS), or cloud backup, is the automatic copy of company data to remote servers, in a data center away from your premises, from which you restore it after a failure, a mistake, a theft or ransomware. It is the offsite copy of the 3-2-1 rule. Rackone delivers it on Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud, as an Acronis Platinum Service Provider.

Cloud backup is one of the services of Rackone's cyber security for business.

Fire, flood, disk failure, accidental deletion, ransomware: the 3-2-1 rule protects company data against each of them, and its last digit, the offsite backup, is the copy that survives the loss of the premises:

  • 3 copies of your data
  • 2 different media
  • 1 offsite and immutable, in Italy or in the European Union
What the managed service includes
  • Automatic backup to the cloud and on site, with the same agent
  • Restore of a single file, a mailbox or an entire server, whenever needed
  • Support from our systems engineers in a disaster
  • More space as the company grows: a larger size on the same platform

Full, incremental and differential backup: what is the difference?

Type
What it copies
Pros and limits
Full backup
all data, every time
simple to restore, but it needs a lot of space and time
Incremental backup
only what changed since the last backup of any type
fast and light; a restore needs the full copy and every increment
Differential backup
what changed since the last full copy
restores from two copies, but grows every day until the next full one

After the first full copy, Acronis always works incrementally: the backup window stays short, and the platform rebuilds the data from any restore point automatically.

One platform

Acronis cloud backup: what it protects

One console and one agent for more than 30 workload types: servers, PCs, virtual machines, applications and SaaS. No separate tools to maintain, and a single point for every restore.

  • Physical: file, disk and full image backup for Windows and Linux servers, PCs and Macs; bare-metal restore, even to different hardware, with Acronis Universal Restore; forensic backup and continuous data protection (CDP)
  • Virtual: agentless protection for VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV and Proxmox VE; agent-based backup for every supported guest system and for VMs in public clouds
  • Applications: application-aware backup of Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint, Active Directory, SAP HANA and Oracle Database
  • SaaS: Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace with unlimited storage, archiving and migration between organisations

For a Proxmox infrastructure there is also native backup, managed by us.

The platforms Acronis protects: Windows and Mac workstations, Windows and Linux servers, eleven hypervisors including Proxmox VE

Protects the identity layer the company depends on: users, groups, policies and configurations, with point-in-time restore and relationships intact, beyond Microsoft's native recovery limits.

Mail, Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint with unlimited storage, archiving and migration between organisations. Granular restore, down to a single email.

Not just a copy

A backup is judged by the restore, not by the copy

On request, Rackone runs a real restore test in an isolated environment: the test verifies that the data is actually restored, not only that the job completed successfully. A written report states the result and the measured restore times.

  • 1 Restore to an isolated environment, without touching production
  • 2 Integrity check and opening of sample files
  • 3 Written report with measured restore times

Recovery

Fast recovery, less downtime

A backup has value only if the restore is fast and clean. Acronis reduces restore times, even across large environments, and keeps users operational during failures and attacks.

  • Instant Restore for virtual machines
  • P2V, V2V and V2C conversions to move systems between platforms
  • One-click recovery for thousands of infected machines at once
  • Integrated disaster recovery with failover to the cloud directly from the backups

Security

Immutable backup and built-in security

An immutable backup is a copy that nobody can change or delete for the whole retention period you choose: not ransomware, not someone who has stolen an administrator's credentials. Acronis pairs it with native security controls and with automatic validation of the copies, which verifies by checksum and by booting the virtual machine that the backup can actually be restored.

  • AI-based anti-malware and scanning of backup images
  • Safe Recovery to prevent the restore of infected machines
  • Geo-redundant, immutable storage with replication and encryption
  • Archive retention and forensic backup for regulated sectors

Data sovereignty

Where are your backups stored?

Your backups are stored in Italy, in the Acronis data center in Rome, or in the European Union, as you choose: always under the GDPR, with no transfers outside the EU. The Italian site helps when a contract or an internal policy requires the copy to stay in Italy, and the contract names the data center.

Copies travel encrypted and stay encrypted at rest, and Rackone is an Italian company: you always know where your data is stored and who can access it, in line with GDPR and NIS2.

Frequently asked questions about backup as a service

How much space do I need?

The backup-as-a-service space you need is the data to protect plus the history you want to keep: as a rough guide, 1 TB covers the file server of a small or medium company with a few years of history. Start from the plan that covers today's space: you can move up a size at any time, and clients stay unlimited.

How long does the first full backup take?

The first full backup is the longest, because it copies everything: its duration depends on the amount of data and on the upload bandwidth of the site. Later backups copy only the changes and fit in an overnight window. The window for the first backup is agreed with you, so that office operations are not slowed down.

Who can see my data?

The content of your cloud backup stays yours: copies travel encrypted and stay encrypted at rest, and our systems engineers manage the jobs and the service status, not the content of the copies. Copies are immutable until retention expires, so nobody can encrypt or delete them early, and they are stored in Italy, in the Acronis data center in Rome, or in the European Union, as you choose.

Can I also back up on site, as well as to the cloud?

Yes, the same backup-as-a-service agent writes to a disk or a NAS on your premises and to the cloud: that is the 3-2-1 rule applied in full. The local copy serves fast restores; the cloud copy serves recovery when the premises are unavailable.

How do I leave the service if I change my mind?

Leaving Rackone's backup as a service is simple: the fee is monthly, and cancellation stops the renewal for the following month. Until the last day of service, restores stay unlimited and free, so there is time to retrieve your data before the copies expire.

Do restores cost extra?

No, restoring from Rackone's cloud backup costs nothing: restores are unlimited and free for as long as the service runs, whether you need a single file or a whole server. The fee covers cloud space, not the number of times you need your data back.

What is the difference between cloud backup and disaster recovery?

Cloud backup keeps copies of your data, from which you restore files, mailboxes or servers; disaster recovery restarts whole systems in the cloud when your site is down. The first reduces lost data, the second downtime: with Acronis, disaster recovery is added to the backup you already have, on the same platform.

Can a company outside Italy buy backup as a service from Rackone?

Yes, Rackone's backup as a service can be bought by a company anywhere in the world: the copies are stored in Italy or in the European Union, under the GDPR, the cart is in English, and our team answers in English at the same contacts as for Italian customers.

Protection beyond backup

Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud adds anti-malware, EDR and endpoint management to the backup, in the same console: fewer tools to manage and a single point of contact.
