Proxmox VE Subscription
One key per server: socket counting examples, activation, renewal and server changes.
LICENSES AND SUBSCRIPTIONS
Strictly speaking, there is no Proxmox license to buy: Proxmox VE and Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) are open source software, free to use, including for business. What you buy is the Proxmox subscription, a yearly plan per CPU socket or per server that gives access to the Enterprise repository and, from the Basic level, to vendor support. Rackone supplies it as an official reseller: it has been a Proxmox Gold Partner since 2021, the first in Italy.

For a business, the cost of Proxmox VE is the cost of the subscription: yearly, per occupied CPU socket, never per core or per virtual machine. Prices from the official Proxmox price list.
¹ Guaranteed first response time for critical support requests (Severity 1), within the coverage hours of the level. ² Round-the-clock support for the Premium level has been available since 19 October 2026, including for existing Premium customers. ³ Round-the-clock support for the Standard level will be available by the end of 2026, including for existing Standard customers. Net prices, VAT excluded. Subscription term: one year from purchase.
The Proxmox Backup Server subscription is yearly and per server, with unlimited backup storage and clients at every level. Prices from the official Proxmox price list.

Yes, Proxmox is free, and its features do not depend on the subscription: clustering, high availability, live migration, Ceph, backup and SDN are available at every level, and even without a subscription. The code, released under the GNU AGPLv3 license by the Austrian company Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH, is free to download.
The subscription includes three components: updates from the Enterprise repository; from the Basic level, support tickets with the vendor; also from Basic, the repository and support for Proxmox Datacenter Manager (PDM) (page in Italian), the multi-cluster console. Lab and test environments do not need a subscription.
The repository, the archive a server downloads its updates from, comes in two versions. The no-subscription repository is free and receives packages earlier, after a shorter testing cycle. The Enterprise repository delivers updates after extensive testing and is the version recommended for production.
Vendor guidance: Standard is the recommended level for everyday operations, Premium is meant for business-critical infrastructure, and Basic is the entry level for production.
Production subscriptions have three service levels, the same for Proxmox VE and Proxmox Backup Server. Choose the level based on how critical the workloads are, your in-house skills and the volume of support you expect. Every level includes stable updates, every software feature and access to Proxmox technical support; what changes is the number of tickets, the first response time and the coverage hours.
Proxmox business-hours support for Europe runs Monday to Friday, 07:00-17:00 CET/CEST, on Austrian business days. Since 19 October 2026, customers in North America and Asia-Pacific get support during the business hours of their own region. Proxmox expects qualified resellers to offer support in other time zones and in local languages.
ARM64: Proxmox offers support for ARM64 servers on request, through its sales team; Rackone forwards the request to the vendor.

One key per server: socket counting examples, activation, renewal and server changes.
Levels for the backup server, with unlimited backup storage and clients.
The rules are set by the vendor.
Example: three nodes with two processors each have six sockets to cover, that is three 2-CPU Proxmox VE keys, all at the same level. More examples of counting, activation, renewal and server changes are on the Proxmox VE subscription page.
In 2021 Rackone became the first company in Italy to become a Proxmox Gold Partner, and it provides consulting and support.
Rackone is listed in the official Proxmox partner directory as Gold Partner and Reseller Partner for Italy, and Proxmox refers buyers to qualified resellers for local purchasing, consulting, deployment and support in their language. The subscription is the same; buying it from Rackone adds four things:
The partner program comes with a reserved price list. We never contact your end customers.
FOR NON-PRODUCTION USE
The Community subscription is meant for labs, training environments and professional test installations. It gives access to the stable Enterprise repository, without vendor technical support: help comes from the Proxmox community forum.
Use cases listed by Proxmox: home labs, professional users at home, training environments, evaluation clusters and non-critical workloads. For production workloads Proxmox points to the Basic, Standard or Premium levels, the only ones with access to technical support.
Proxmox VE is free: you only pay for the subscription, which is optional, yearly and per CPU socket. According to the official Proxmox price list, VAT excluded, the Community level costs €120 per socket per year, Basic €370, Standard €550 and Premium €1,100. A cluster of three servers with two processors each counts six sockets: at the Standard level that is €3,300 per year, whatever the number of cores or virtual machines.
Yes, Proxmox VE is free for commercial use too: the code is distributed under the GNU AGPLv3 license, and every feature, clustering and high availability included, is available without a subscription. The subscription is optional and adds the Enterprise repository and vendor support; for production, Proxmox points to the Basic, Standard or Premium levels.
A Proxmox license, meaning the Proxmox VE subscription, is priced per occupied CPU socket, not per core: the price does not change with the number of cores, so an 8-core processor needs the same subscription as a 64-core one. A server with two processors needs one 2-CPU key. Proxmox Backup Server, on the other hand, is priced per server.
No, all nodes in a Proxmox VE cluster must have the same subscription level: it is a vendor rule. With a limited budget, choose a lower level for the whole cluster; the software features do not change.
Round-the-clock vendor support has been available for the Premium level since 19 October 2026 and will be available for the Standard level by the end of 2026, including for existing customers. The Basic level stays on business hours: for Europe, Monday to Friday, 07:00-17:00 CET/CEST, on Austrian business days.
When a Proxmox subscription expires, virtual machines keep running: the software does not stop and loses no features. Access to the Enterprise repository and to vendor tickets ends; until renewal, updates require switching the node to the no-subscription repository. With co-terming, all expiry dates fall on a single day.
No, a Proxmox subscription includes the vendor's support, by ticket in English or German. Rackone's 24h Proxmox support is a separate contract, with its own plans and coverage: our systems engineers work on your systems, in English or in Italian, and the service requires an active Proxmox subscription.
Yes, you can use Proxmox VE without a subscription: the features are the same. Updates then come from the no-subscription repository, which the vendor recommends for test and non-production environments because it receives packages earlier and with less testing. A subscription adds the Enterprise repository, recommended for production, and from the Basic level support tickets.
The Proxmox VE subscription is yearly, priced per CPU socket rather than per core (VMware licenses per core), and has four levels. Community gives the Enterprise repository without tickets; Basic, Standard and Premium add 3, 10 or unlimited tickets a year, with progressively faster first response, and Premium support has run around the clock since 19 October 2026. All nodes in a cluster have the same level.
Tell us the number of nodes and processors per node: we'll recommend the level and quantity, with no obligation, even when the Basic level turns out to be enough.
