Request the assessmentProxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE) is an open source server virtualisation platform based on Debian GNU/Linux. It brings two technologies together in one console: KVM virtualisation for full virtual machines, each with its own operating system, and LXC containers for lighter workloads that share the host kernel. On top of these come Ceph distributed storage, software-defined networking and cluster high availability.
Compared with proprietary hypervisors, Proxmox VE stands out not only for its open code but for having no mandatory licence fee. The platform is downloaded and installed freely under the GNU AGPLv3 licence, while the optional subscription gives access to the Enterprise repository, stable updates and support from the vendor. For anyone looking for a VMware alternative after the Broadcom acquisition, Proxmox VE offers a path without lock-in, with costs that do not rise at every renewal.
Proxmox VE fits both the single server of a small company and the multi-node cluster of a data center, and the same platform scales without changing licence or interface. It is used by manufacturers, public bodies and research centres for IT infrastructures where service continuity is a requirement: our customers include national research institutes and a body running critical national infrastructure.
To adopt Proxmox VE you need x86-64 hardware with virtualisation support, a network sized for the expected traffic and, when high availability is required, at least three nodes to keep the cluster quorum. The rest is design (topology, storage, backup and failover policies), and that is where we come in.
