PROXMOX VE SUBSCRIPTIONS

Proxmox VE subscription

The Proxmox VE subscription is a yearly key tied to a single Proxmox VE server and sized to its CPU sockets: it enables the Enterprise repository and, from the Basic level, vendor support tickets. It unlocks no features: the software is identical at every level. Rackone, a Proxmox Gold Partner since 2021 and the first in Italy, supplies it.

Proxmox VE subscription: what it enables on the server

Once uploaded to the node, the key connects the server to three vendor services from Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH, based in Vienna. The software features, including clustering, high availability, live migration, Ceph and backup, stay the same without a subscription: the code is distributed under the GNU AGPLv3 license.

  • Enterprise repository: the repository, the archive the server downloads its updates from, with packages that go through extensive testing. It is the version Proxmox recommends for production servers.
  • Technical support: from the Basic level, tickets through the Proxmox Customer Portal, in English or German, on the latest stable release.
  • Proxmox Datacenter Manager: from Basic, the Enterprise repository and support also cover Proxmox Datacenter Manager (PDM) (page in Italian), the multi-cluster console, which has no key of its own.

The subscription agreement excludes system and network design, backup strategies, data recovery and high availability design from support: that work stays with the partner.

Proxmox VE subscription levels for production: Premium, Standard and Basic

For a Proxmox VE server in production there are three service levels with the same features: what changes is the number of tickets, the first response time and the coverage hours. The chosen level applies to every node in the cluster, so choose it based on the most critical workloads.

New · ARM64 Proxmox offers support for ARM64 servers on request, through its sales team; Rackone forwards the request to the vendor.

¹ Guaranteed first response time for critical support requests (Severity 1), within the coverage hours of the level. ² Round-the-clock support for the Premium level has been available since 19 October 2026, including for existing Premium customers. ³ Round-the-clock support for the Standard level will be available by the end of 2026, including for existing Standard customers. Net prices, VAT excluded. Subscription term: one year from purchase.

Vendor guidance: Standard is the recommended level for everyday operations, Premium is meant for business-critical infrastructure, and Basic is the entry level for production.

Proxmox business-hours support for Europe runs Monday to Friday, 07:00-17:00 CET/CEST, on Austrian business days; since 19 October 2026, customers in North America and Asia-Pacific get support during the business hours of their own region. Proxmox considers a request critical when production is down, with data loss or servers not working, and no procedural workaround exists. Proxmox expects qualified resellers to offer support in other time zones and in local languages.

How many Proxmox VE subscriptions you need: counting sockets

Every Proxmox VE server has its own subscription key, tied to the server identifier (Server ID) and sized to its occupied sockets, that is the physical processors mounted on the motherboard. The number of cores does not count. In a Proxmox cluster every node must be covered for all its sockets, and all nodes must have the same level.

The price follows the same unit: the subscription is yearly and priced per socket, so a 2-CPU key costs twice as much as a 1-CPU key at the same level. With Standard, that is €550 for 1 CPU and €1,100 for 2 CPUs, VAT excluded. Prices by level are in the Proxmox subscription price list.

The number of sockets of a node is shown in the web interface, in the node's Summary panel. Proxmox VE installed inside a virtual machine, that is with nested virtualization, is not covered by the agreement. The backup server follows a different rule, one subscription per server, described on the Proxmox Backup Server subscription page.

Activation, renewal and server changes

  • Activation: the key arrives by email and is uploaded from the web interface, in the node's Subscription panel.
  • Renewal: automatic after one year; the renewal invoice is issued 30 days before expiry, which is also the deadline for cancellation.
  • Upgrade: moving to a higher level during the year means paying only the difference; moving to a lower level is possible only at expiry.
  • Server change: when the hardware is replaced, the key is reissued on the new Server ID.
  • Multi-year payment: besides single years, Proxmox offers prepayment for two or three years, with the price locked for the whole period.

For subscriptions bought from Rackone, reissues, upgrades and cancellations are requested from Rackone, as the Proxmox agreement provides for resellers.

Buying from Rackone

The subscription is the same one sold in the Proxmox shop, invoiced from Italy, with expiry dates aligned through co-terming. Support from Rackone on your systems, in English or in Italian, is a separate contract: 24h Proxmox support (page in Italian). The reasons to buy through an official Proxmox reseller and the comparison with Proxmox Backup Server are on the Proxmox licensing page.

The partner program comes with a reserved price list. We never contact your end customers.

FOR NON-PRODUCTION USE

Proxmox VE Community subscription

The Community subscription is meant for home labs, technical training environments and professional test installations. It gives access to the stable Enterprise repository, without vendor technical support: help comes from the Proxmox community forum. The price is €120 per CPU socket per year, VAT excluded.

Use cases listed by Proxmox: home labs, professional users at home, training environments, evaluation clusters and non-critical workloads. For production workloads Proxmox points to the Basic, Standard or Premium levels, the only ones with access to technical support.

Proxmox VE subscription: frequently asked questions

Does a server with two processors need two Proxmox VE subscriptions?

No, a server with two processors needs a single 2-CPU key: the Proxmox VE subscription is tied to the server and covers all of its occupied sockets. It costs the same as two sockets at that level. In a cluster of three nodes with two processors each, there are three 2-CPU keys.

Do support tickets from several Proxmox subscriptions add up?

No, Proxmox VE subscription tickets do not add up: each subscription assigns its own tickets to the server it is tied to. With two servers and two Basic subscriptions, each server has three tickets, and they do not go into a shared pool. With Premium, tickets are unlimited.

Can a Proxmox VE subscription move to a new server?

Yes, a Proxmox VE subscription moves to a new server when the key, which is tied to the Server ID, is reissued. Reissuing is free up to three times a year, from the Proxmox portal or through the reseller; beyond that, you open a request with the vendor.

Can you change the Proxmox VE subscription level during the year?

Yes, but only upward: a Proxmox VE subscription upgrade is possible during the year by paying only the difference. Moving to a lower level is possible only at expiry. In a cluster, a level change applies to every node, since all nodes must have the same level.

How do you cancel a Proxmox VE subscription?

A Proxmox VE subscription renews automatically every year. The renewal invoice is issued 30 days before expiry, which is also the deadline for cancellation. For subscriptions bought from Rackone, cancellation is requested from Rackone, as the Proxmox agreement provides for resellers.
